Paying Civil Servants through the Banking System Reduces Corruption

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has said that electronic bank payments are fast and can help guarantee the fight against corruption.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for nearly 7,000 students of the Cambodian University for Specialties (CUS) on Monday, 23 January, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the electronic bank payments are safe and do not cause worry over the safety of money transfers or losing money to fraud officers.

He said that the implementation of online bank payments has resulted in the discovery of tens of thousands of ghost officials who only have their names on the payrolls but are not present during working hours.

“Some people work in three places, work in this ministry but have their name also in another ministry," he said. "Thus, we utilized information technology, on the one hand, to speed up the process, and on the other hand, to push back on the issue of corruption."

The Prime Minister also praised the General Department of Taxation for implementing the latest technology in the tax collection process. He said he has also observed various ministries beginning to use new technology to perform various tasks safely and quickly.
